Cypress Bay Lightning, Preseason Overview

The Cypress Bay Lightning was a team talked about around the state at the end of last season. Losing by just 3 points to the Central Rockets in the state semifinalists’ game, the Lightning were the surprise of the season.

“We worked hard that game, but we didn’t finish” Senior Andres Abed commented on the game against the Rockets.

The team is taking the loss as a boost into the upcoming season. They have adapted the phrase “finish what you start” as the 2011-2012 theme on the field.

As a result of going deep into the playoffs last year, the team is no longer shy about their talents. They’ve committed to giving their all to get a taste of the championship title. Senior Remir Martin observed a growth in the leadership role on the field since the previous season. Players have stepped up their play and helped out junior players in hopes of going all the way this season.

“We’re more confident coming into this season. We know we have a chance to win states.”  Senior Josh Witts said.

The Lightning have a chance to be great, partly because of their coaching tactics. Something rarely coached on other teams, is emphasized at Cypress Bay: The Little Things. The coaches teach the athletes with immense detail, showing what would happen if something was done wrong and giving them the option of the different ways to do it correctly. Every drill ran by the defense was   a game time scenario, the players were being taught to be playmakers, not just defend the ball.

With very competitive one on one drills, each player seemed to be giving it their all and bettering themselves as an individual athlete. There was even the occasion where injured players would jump in just to practice running routes.

If Cypress Bay continues to strive and practice with such ambition, there’s no telling how far they may advance as a team this season.
